Chapter 22: The River Road

Boone's POV

The president of the Gallow Kings did not get off his bike.

He sat at my gate with the engine ticking and looked at me through the bars.

"My second set your fire," he said. "He had his shooter on the river road for your captain."

"Why are you telling me?" I asked.

"Because he did it after I gave you my word." His face did not change. "Nobody in my club breaks my word. I mean to deal with him where both clubs can see."

Laney came up beside me with her hand in mine.

"Where is he?" she asked.

"At your father's lot. He has your stepbrother tied to a post, and a rifle on the road."

"What does he want?"

"He says he'll let the boy go for your signature on a paper."

"A bill of sale," Laney said.

"A bill of sale, in front of both clubs. At noon."

"And you?"

"I'll stand with you," the president said, "unarmed. I'd like him to see me do it."

I looked at Laney.

I had known her three weeks, and I was already sure there was only one answer she would give.

"I'm not signing anything," she said.

"No."

"But I'm going."

"Laney."

"It's my lot, Boone." She squeezed my fingers. "If I'm not standing on it, he's got a story that I ran."

So at noon we rode down the river road together, with Laney's arms around my waist and her cheek on my back.

Every Crow who could ride came behind us, with their cuts over their soot.

The Dorsett Salvage lot lay in the sun, a wide field of gravel and rust, with a gate hanging off one hinge.
