Chapter 9: Sign

I read the screenshot twice.

Then I held it up so the whole doorway could see it.

Customers had drifted in from the lot, a retired mailman and a woman with a van, and a man holding a carburetor.

Nobody was pretending to work.

"Look at the time stamp," I said. "Two-fourteen on Thursday afternoon."

"That's right," the lawyer said.

"I work in an emergency room. Our phones go in a locker at the start of every shift. I was on a trauma floor from seven that morning until my supervisor sent me home."

The lawyer blinked.

"I wouldn't have touched a phone at two-fourteen if someone were bleeding on my table," I said. "And I do not sign my texts with an L."

"Mr. Mallory provided this," the lawyer said, and he turned his head toward Trent.

"It's from her number," Trent said quickly.

"Is it?" I said.

I held out my phone in my good hand.

"Then show me the thread. Open your phone, Trent. Show everyone the message."

He did not move.

"You can't," I said. "Because it isn't in my thread. It's a picture of a picture."

The lawyer took the page back and studied it.

A line grew between his eyebrows.

"Mr. Mallory," he said slowly, "you told me she texted you in writing."

"She did."

"You told me you had the original."

"It's on my other phone."

"You have another phone?"

Trent's neck was red up to his ears.

"Don't look at me like that," he said. "She's lying. She's a nurse, she knows how to work people."

A low sound went through the shop.

Hank put his coffee down.

"Son," he said, "I stapled a bullet hole in that girl on a couch with a stapler, and she told me where to aim."
