Chapter 13: The Service Stairs
"Not here," Brody said.
He took my elbow and steered me through the staff door behind the coat check.
We passed a waiter with a tray and went into the service stairwell.
The door sighed shut behind us.
The ballroom quartet went faint. The bare concrete smelled of floor cleaner and fry oil.
"Talk," I said.
"I should have told you Monday."
"Monday." I gave a short laugh. "You found out someone planted me in your building on Monday, and you let me plan a gala for you all week."
"I wanted to find out who first."
"You wanted to find out who without me. That's the part I can't get past."
"You'd have walked."
"I'm walking now."
I pulled my lanyard over my head and held it out to him.
"I quit. I'll write it up tonight, and Regan can have the letter in the morning."
He looked at the badge swinging between us, and he didn't take it.
"No," he said.
"It isn't a question."
"Then the answer is no. Regan hired you, and Regan is the only person who can accept it. She won't."
"Then I'll walk out the front."
"Walk out where, Maddie? To Lena's couch?" His voice cracked on it, and he stopped. "He blacklisted you in four hotels. You're safest in the one building he has to come through me to reach."
"I'm not your safe house."
"I know what you are."
"Do you? Because I don't think you do. You're the man who stood in my cabin doorway and told me you fixed things for a hotel group."
