Chapter 19: The Hearing

The whole room turned to look at me.

On the wall, my own head was thrown back, a hundred and forty inches wide.

"No," I said.

I made my voice steady and loud, the voice I use to tell wedding guests where the bathrooms are.

"I'm not his direct report. I report to Regan Kincaid. Human Resources filed it on my first morning."

"A technicality," the chairman said.

"It's what the clause says."

He smiled sadly. "Ms. Stanwood, nobody here is judging you personally."

"Then take it off the wall."

Nobody moved.

"I'm going to tell you what's on that picture," I said. "It's a woman who left a man at the altar and flew to an island to be nobody."

"It's a man who told her his name was Jack. I didn't know he was your CEO. He didn't know I was a runaway bride. We found out in this room, nine days later."

The woman at the far end of the table put her pen down.

"Who hired you?" she asked.

"A recruiter called me. I hadn't applied."

"Who paid the recruiter?"

I looked at Regan.

Regan stood up and set a single sheet in the middle of the table.

"MacIntyre Brands, LLC," she said. "The company of Hayes MacIntyre, the face of Aldine Hospitality. He paid eighteen thousand dollars to put Ms. Stanwood in our building."

A murmur went round the table.

"That proves Mr. MacIntyre is a vengeful ex-fiancé," the chairman said. "It proves nothing about this board."
