Chapter 3: Cabin Six

Maddie tells Jack she left a man at the altar and he doesn't flinch, they spend the first night together, and at four in the morning she sees a hotel master keycard in his wallet.

The kiss went on until the pier lights came on above us.

Jack pulled back first, his forehead against mine.

"My cabin's the last one on the path," he said. "Cabin six. You can say no."

"I know I can."

"I need you to know it twice."

"No," I said. "I mean, no, I'm not saying no."

He laughed against my mouth and took my hand.

We walked the whole path without speaking.

The sand was cold under my feet, and my pulse went wild against his fingers.

He shut the door and put me against it.

I wanted to be gentle, and I couldn't.

I pulled his shirt up and over his head.

I put my palms flat on his chest, and he made a low sound when I dragged my nails down it.

"Maddie."

"Wait," I said. "I have to tell you something, and I'm breaking my own rule to do it."

He stopped, his hands on my hips. "Rule two."

"Yesterday I was supposed to get married. Four hundred people. I walked out in the middle of the vows."

I watched his face.

He didn't flinch. He didn't ask who or why.

He said, "Good."

"Good?"

"Whatever he did, you walked out of it. That's the best thing I've heard about anyone."

His thumb pressed into my hipbone.

"Is he going to be a problem tonight?"

"He's nothing tonight."

"Then neither of us is leaving this room until you tell me to."

I kissed him, and that was my answer.

He lifted me by the backs of my thighs and carried me to the bed.

I locked my ankles behind him and felt exactly how much he wanted me.

He laid me down and stood over me.

He took off my cover-up and the bikini top, and his eyes went slowly down my body.

"You're burned," he said, and ran one knuckle along my shoulder.

"Don't you dare talk about my sunburn."

"I'm talking about your skin." He bent and put his mouth where the strap had been. "It's so warm."

The heat of it went all the way down my spine.

He kissed down my chest and took my nipple in his mouth.

I arched off the mattress and said his name, the only name I had for him.

He worked his way lower, unhurried, his hands pushing my thighs wide.

"Jack, please."

"Tell me what you want."

"Your mouth." My voice broke. "Now."

He pulled my shorts and everything under them down my legs and put his mouth on me.

I had never been that loud.

My fist closed in the sheet and my other hand in his hair.

His tongue was slow, then not slow, finding the place that made my legs shake and not leaving it.

"Right there," I gasped. "Don't stop. Don't you dare stop."

He didn't.

He slid two fingers inside me and curled them.

I came apart under his mouth with a cry that the next cabin must have heard.

He stayed with me through it, his hand heavy on my stomach, kissing the inside of my thigh until I could breathe.

Then I got hold of his belt.

"Your turn," I said.

"Maddie, you don't have to."

"Take them off."

He took off his pants and stood naked in the lamplight, thick and hard and ready.

I sat up and wrapped my hand around him.

His head fell back. "God."

I took him in my mouth.

He swore, low and ragged, and his hand shook where it touched the back of my head.

"Slow," he said. "Please. I want to be inside you."

I looked up at him with his cock in my mouth, and every other thought left his face.

I let him slide free, wet, and lay back.

He came over me with hands that weren't steady.

The sight of that undid me more than anything he had done yet.

"Look at me," he said.

I did.

He pushed in slowly, one long inch at a time, and I felt every one of them.

"Oh my God," I said. "You're so..."

"Breathe," he said hoarsely. "Let me in."

When he was all the way in, he held still, and we stared at each other.

Then he moved.

He rolled his hips in long, deep strokes, his mouth on my throat.

His hand went under my knee and opened me wider.

The bed knocked against the wall.

"Harder," I said.

"You sure?"

"Jack."

He gave me harder.

The headboard slammed.

I met every thrust, my nails in his back and my heels against his ass.

When he shifted and hit that deep place inside me, I screamed his name.

"There," he said. "I've got you."

"Don't stop."

"Never."

I came again around him, so hard that I couldn't see.

He groaned and went rigid and followed me, with my name in his mouth.

We lay tangled in the damp sheets while the fan turned over us.

His fingers traced slow circles on my back.

At some point I slept.

I woke in the dark with the fan still turning and his arm around me.

The clock on the nightstand said 4:07.

I eased out from under his arm to find water, and my foot knocked his wallet off the chair.

It fell open on the floor, and a plastic card slid half out of it.

The card had a gold crest and a long row of numbers.

When I turned it to the lamp, I saw the words MASTER KEY, ALL PROPERTIES.

That wasn't a handyman's card.

I looked at the man asleep in the bed, and he didn't move.
