Chapter 23: The Dress

The dress came back from the cleaners in a box the size of a coffin, and Maddie opened it in the chapel's bride room.

"It's the same dress," she said.

"It's the dress I like," I said. "It was never the dress's fault."

It was the second Saturday of June, one in the afternoon, and the sun was coming through the same stained glass.

I stood in a slip with my hair half pinned and a pencil stuck through the bun.

My mother sat on the little velvet bench with a tissue already wadded in her fist.

She had driven in from Joliet at nine that morning and had cried twice since.

"You're sure," she said.

"I'm sure."

"He's a good man now?"

"He's a work in progress," I said. "He knows it. He's earned each step of it, Mom, and it's still my decision."

"That's good." She dabbed her eyes. "Your father would have wanted to hit him first."

"Dad would have shaken his hand and then checked his pockets."

She laughed through her tears.

"He would. Oh, he would."

Maddie stepped behind me to do up the buttons.

She had been quiet for a minute, and Maddie is never quiet.

"What?" I said.

"Nothing. It's just, a year ago you were screaming into a towel on my bathroom floor." She tugged a button. "Now you're on your way to the same chapel on purpose."

"People change."
