Chapter 3: Paid in Full

Cassia takes Harvey to bed on her terms, and after, he says he loves her and sounds like he means it.

I handed Rhys his phone back and told him to keep quiet.

"That's it?" he said. "You're not going to tell him you know?"

"Not yet."

"Cassia, what are you going to do?"

"Get married," I said. "Right up until I don't."

That night I let myself into Harvey's penthouse with the key he had given me in January.

He was at the kitchen island in his shirtsleeves, frowning at a laptop.

He looked up, and his whole face changed.

I had seen that change a hundred times and called it love.

Now I watched it carefully.

"You didn't text," he said.

"I didn't want to."

I put my bag on the floor and walked around the island.

Two months.

I would be gone in two months, and he had meant to make a fool of me for all of them.

So I decided I was going to take something for it.

I took his laptop out from under his hands and closed it.

"Cassia."

"You work too much."

"I have a call at nine."

"You have me at eight," I said, and I sat on the edge of the marble in front of him and hooked my ankles behind his thighs.

His hands came to my knees.

His eyes were the grey of a storm over the lake, and they were not cold at all.

I pulled him in by his tie and kissed him hard.

He made a low sound against my mouth and the ground went out from under me.

I hated that.

I kept kissing him anyway.

His hands slid up my thighs and pushed my skirt to my hips.

"Take it off," I said.

He pulled my shirt over my head and tossed it somewhere behind him.

His mouth went to my collarbone, then lower, over the lace of my bra.

I tugged his shirt open, and buttons skittered across the floor.

"Cassia," he said, rough. "Bedroom."

"Here."

He laughed once, breathless, and then he lifted me off the counter and carried me.

He didn't make it past the sofa.

I pushed him down onto the cushions and climbed over him, and he looked up at me.

I unhooked my bra and let it fall.

His hands came up to cup my breasts, and his thumbs dragged over my nipples until I gasped.

"Beautiful," he said. "God, you're beautiful."

I ground down against the hard length of him through his trousers, and his head fell back.

"Don't move," I told him.

"Yes."

I undid his belt and took his cock in my hand.

He was thick and hot and already wet at the tip.

I stroked him slowly, the way he liked, watching his jaw clench.

"Cassia, I can't, I'm going to"

"Not yet."

I stood, pushed my underwear down, and stepped out of it.

I put one knee on either side of his hips, and I took him inside me an inch at a time.

He swore under his breath.

I swore too.

He filled me so completely that I had to hold on to his shoulders.

I started to ride him, hard and deep, and his hands gripped my hips, urging me faster.

"Look at me," he said.

I looked.

He was staring at me.

I almost hated him for that.

I rolled my hips, and the pleasure climbed, sharp and fast, and I dug my nails into his chest.

"Harvey."

"I've got you."

He slid a hand between us and found my clit with his thumb, and I came apart, shaking, with his name in my mouth.

He followed a moment later, groaning against my neck, his arms locked around my back.

We stayed there, breathing, sweat cooling on our skin.

I pressed my forehead into his shoulder.

I did not feel finished.

I felt like I had taken a piece of him, and I already wanted another.

After a long time he tilted my chin up and kissed me, slow and gentle.

"I love you," he said.

I waited for the lie to show in his face.

It didn't.

His eyes were wet, and his hands were shaking.

"I love you, Cassia. I need you to know that."

Then he said, more quietly, "Whatever happens."
