We went to the ship in the dark, with my jacket buttoned over nothing much and Havrik's coat around my shoulders.
The case sat on the dead galley's welded hatch, where the courier had left it.
It was grey metal, scratched, no bigger than a lunch box.
Someone had written T. QUINTANA on the lid in a Concord clerk's block capitals.
Under that, in a hand I would have known anywhere, was a smaller line.
For Inez.
I sat down on the deck and opened it.
Inside was a book bound in black cloth, soft with handling.
Every page was in my father's tiny square script.
The Ashfall lane was drawn out turn by turn, with every wreck marked and every mine sleeping where it lay.
The coffee ring was on the corner of the first page.
I put my hand over my mouth.
On the flyleaf, he'd written a line I'd never seen.
For Inez, when she's old enough to be trusted with it. Fly it better than I did.
Havrik crouched beside me and did not touch the page.
"He drew it for you," he said, very quietly.
"He drew it so I'd always have a road."
I laughed, and it came out wet.
