Chapter 23: The Keys

Cecily laughed, softly, on her stair.

"With what, Nessa? You gave your money to Petra."

"I don't need money," I said. "I'm owed."

I nodded at the silversmiths, who had stopped stacking glasses.

"So are they. At nine tomorrow the bank will ask you who this company owes. Tell them. For once."

"And then?"

"Then the people you owe take it, instead of the bank."

She looked past me at Cian, by the door.

"And him?"

"He's putting money behind us," I said. "Not over us. He'll own a share and say so out loud."

Cian lifted his glass half an inch from across the room.

Cecily looked at the cup on its plinth for a long time.

She didn't say yes. She didn't have to. The bank said it for her.

At ten o'clock on the last Monday in November, all the staff of Fitzsimons & Sons stood on the shop floor.

The front door was still locked.

The nine silversmiths stood along the glass cases in their leather aprons.

The shop manager stood behind his counter, polishing his glasses for something to do.
