Chapter 16: The Account That Was Never Joint
The account-holder line is already visible beneath Patrick's hand.
Nell Ashford.
Harland's voice comes through the speaker. 'The account was used as an administrative convenience, and the parties understood the rental income to be jointly controlled.'
Patrick has not read the page yet. Elena has placed it in front of him, beside the tax returns bearing his signature. Four years of rental deposits sit behind the summary sheet. My name appears above every one.
'Please read the account-holder name aloud,' Elena says.
Patrick looks at the page, then at me. 'Elena, I am not sure this is necessary.'
'You were sure enough to sign four years of returns.'
The back office holds one desk, two filing cabinets, and a printer that grinds whenever it wakes. Elena's coffee sits beside the keyboard, black and untouched. The smell reaches me before the pain beneath my coat does.
The scar under my ribs is still healing. The rehabilitation ward sent me home early, but my body has not agreed that I am ready for any of this.
Patrick removes his coat and folds it over the spare chair. He wants the meeting to look civil. His hands are the same careful hands that prepared my tax returns. Now they hover above the account-holder line.
'Open the envelope,' I say.
'You asked me to come here without explaining the purpose.'
'You came because Elena said the rental account was involved.'
'That is different from opening bank correspondence in front of me.'
Elena leans against the filing cabinet. 'It is the same account you reported.'
