Chapter 10: Three Years

Willa came down the aisle of the chapel with one hand on the pew backs and the other on her belly.

She was crying prettily.

"I was going to tell you," she said. "I swear I was going to tell you both."

"When?" I asked.

"When the baby came. When I wasn't so scared."

"You've had four years."

"I was twenty-five," Willa said. "A beautiful man stood in front of me and asked about your painting, and I said yes. Just once. I thought it would be one evening."

"And then?"

"And then I was engaged to Simon, and it was too late."

"You never lied," Gavin said.

His voice was very even.

"No, I never did," Willa said, and the relief in her face was awful to watch. "I never said a word that wasn't true. He assumed."

"You said you'd painted it."

"I said yes when he asked if I was the artist."

"That's the same thing," I said.

"Cass." She reached for my hand. "You always gave me everything. I thought you wouldn't mind."

I looked at her fingers.

I had held those fingers on the first day of school. I had held them in four hospital rooms.

I took my hand back.

"The nursery," I said. "The ER. Eleven visits."

"My heart..."

"Your valve was fixed when you were nineteen."

She stopped.

For one second, her whole face went smooth and still, and I saw somebody I'd never met.

Then the tears came again, so fast I almost believed them.

"I was always afraid," Willa whispered. "I could never be sure. You don't know what it's like to be the sick twin."

"I know exactly what it's like," I said. "I stood beside the sick twin for twenty-nine years."
