Chapter 21: Out of My Name

They sat the new Alpha in the tall chair at sunset.

She did it with her hands shaking on the arms, and the pack stood and watched her do it.

Then she looked down at me, and at Hamish beside me, and said, "There are accounts to settle in this hall before the lamps are lit."

My parents were standing at the foot of the dais.

Someone had given my mother a chair, and she had not taken it.

My father held his hat in both hands and kept turning it by the brim.

"Edmund Halstead," the new Alpha said. "You put your name to a contract that pledged a five-year-old child to the Reinhard line. You hid her gift from her for twenty years.

"Do you deny it?"

"No," my father said.

"Do you wish to say anything to the pack?"

He looked at the faces on the benches.

He had been their council officer, their elder, a man they greeted in the market.

"I did it to keep my daughter alive," he said.

"Which one?"

His mouth worked.

"Both," he said. "I swear it, I meant both."

"You meant one," I said.

The hall turned.

I stepped forward, and my father looked at me with something that was almost hope.

"Yvaine," he said. "Please. You were always the sensible one. You know I had no choice."

"You had a choice when I was five."
