Chapter 10: The Tow Girl, Again

"Call your men," I said.

"Send them to Hermantown.

"Send them tonight."

Gio was already dressed and already dialing.

He stood by the cabin window with the phone at his ear and the stove light on his bare back, and he spoke in the flat low voice he used for the yard.

Two names, an address, one instruction.

He hung up and turned around.

"They'll be there in forty minutes," he said.

"Your mother won't see them.

"Nobody will go near the house."

"Your cousin took a photograph of her front door," I said.

"I know," he said.

"Of my mother's door, Gio."

"I know what he did," he said.

I was sitting at the plank table with the quilt around my shoulders and my hands shaking in my lap.

I had not cried.

I was too angry.

It rose up through me in a hot clean line, and every word he said made it climb.

"This is what I meant," I said.

"At the table, with your aunts."

"Raisa."

"You told me you'd sat there because you were playing a game.

"You told me Lorenzo wins if you lose your temper in front of the family."

"He does," Gio said.

"He doesn't need you to lose your temper," I said.

"He needs you to keep sitting there.

"And you did.

"For three days you've let every person in that house call me the tow girl, and you've said my name in the voice you use for the yard dog."

"That isn't fair," he said.
