Chapter 12: The Plaque
I told him in the shed, because it was the only place I could say it.
I had called him from the road.
I said, meet me at the yard, come alone, bring nobody, and I heard him breathe once and say, I'm coming.
It was four in the afternoon and the light was going.
The harbor was the color of lead.
He found me standing under the broken lintel with my back to the black line on the brick.
He came through the dead weeds in his overcoat and stopped three feet from me.
"You went," he said.
"I went."
"Who was she?"
"Gio," I said.
"I need you to stand there and not say anything until I've finished."
His face went very still.
He nodded once.
I put my glove on the plaque and wiped away the green.
"This is Eino Saari," I said.
"He drove for your father for six years.
"He was twenty-nine.
"On a night in November twenty-seven years ago, he drove your father to this shed, and the door was chained from the outside, and your father walked out, and Eino did not."
He had not moved.
"He had a wife.
"Her name is Aune.
"She had a four-day-old daughter, and she gave that daughter to a woman in Hermantown the same week so that no one from this yard would ever find her."
I watched it arrive.
It arrived slowly, like a stone going down through water.
I saw him look at the plaque and at me, and at the plaque again.
I saw him count.
"The daughter," he said.
"Is me."
"Raisa."
"Aune is my mother.
"Eino was my father.
"Your father killed him."
