Chapter 13: The Old Man

"You were always going to find that," Salvatore said again, quieter.

Nobody answered him.

Gio's body was still between me and the door.

I stepped out from behind him with my coat held shut over my open pants.

My braid had come half undone.

I looked at the man who had burned my father.

He looked back at me with no shame in his face at all.

It was only weariness, the weariness of an old dog at a gate it has been through before.

"Not here," he said.

"This place is for the dead.

"The house has a library, and a fire, and chairs.

"Come and sit, both of you, and ask me what you like."

"We'll stand," Gio said.

"Then stand in the warm," his father said.

He turned and walked out of the shed, and the driver went after him with his eyes on the gravel.

I buttoned my pants with hands that had stopped shaking.

I noticed that with some surprise.

I had been afraid of this man since the porch steps.

Now that I had a name for the fear, there was only room for the cold.

We drove up the hill in separate cars.

Gio's fingers stayed locked on the wheel the whole way, and he said nothing.

The library was at the back of the house, with a wall of glass over the lake and a fire as high as my waist.
