Chapter 20: The Night Before

Raisa's POV

He came up Skyline Parkway on foot at three in the afternoon in his shirtsleeves, with snow in his hair.

I was waiting for him at the end of the drive.

"Where's your coat?" I said.

"I left it," he said.

"It was his."

I took off my own and put it around him.

It did not close across his chest, and neither of us cared.

I drove him back down the hill in the gray Subaru, past the yard, to the far back gate where the old tow shed stood against the lake.

He unlocked the little door with a brass key on a loop of red string.

Inside was a long cold room with four idle trucks and a workbench.

At the far end, behind a glass partition, was a small old office.

It held a steel desk, a wall of dead calendars, a space heater that still worked, and a long sagging brown leather couch.

"This was my mother's," he said.

"She did the books for my father's first yard.

"She slept here when the harbor froze and he wouldn't come home."

I looked at the couch.

I looked at him in my coat, with the cold in his face.

"Tonight," I said.

"Here."

"Raisa."

"The dinner is in two days," I said.

"I want one night nobody gave us.

"I want it on your mother's couch, with the heater on.

"No ring and no terms and no house on a hill."

He said nothing for a moment.
