Chapter 13: Cold Coffee
Security walked him to the elevator, and I was not allowed to follow.
They took his badge at the lobby desk.
They took his phone, because the phone belonged to the company.
By the time he reached the sidewalk, his cards had stopped working.
He told me all of this at the diner counter at ten that night, with a paper bag of his own shirts in his lap.
"They let me keep the shirts," he said. "I'm told it was generous."
I laughed, and then I put my hand over my mouth, because it was not funny.
"You can sleep upstairs," I said.
"Poppy's up there."
"Rhona's mother took her for the night. She's already asleep on a couch with a coloring book on her face."
"Then I'll sleep here."
"Roark."
"The booth is long enough."
He looked at the red vinyl corner.
"And I like it.
It smells like pie and burned coffee."
"It smells like fryer oil."
"Then I like fryer oil."
I turned the sign and locked the door.
I turned off the grill and the pie case lights, and left only the neon over the window.
