Chapter 23: First Date
Poppy chose his seat.
She walked the length of the counter with a crayon behind her ear and pointed at the stool by the register.
"That one."
"Why that one?" Roark asked.
"It spins."
He sat.
It spun.
He went all the way around once, gravely, with his hands folded, and Poppy fell against Rhona's mother's knee laughing.
It was Thursday, six o'clock.
The diner was closed to everyone but us, and the neon in the window had been turned to *Open*.
I had made the pancakes myself.
Poppy had asked for them as the first course, because she said dinner was just breakfast that had been to school.
Roark cut his into squares, and she corrected him.
"Triangles."
"Triangles."
"You're doing it wrong."
"I'll learn."
"Daddy learns slow," she told her pancake. "Mommy says."
The fork stopped halfway to his mouth.
I held my breath.
Neither of us had told her what to call him.
She had decided it on her own, between one bite and the next.
He put the fork down carefully.
"I do," he said. His voice was rough. "But I learn."
