Chapter 14: Cookies on the Porch

Zofia's POV

"Stay in the car," I said.

Lucio's hands were still on the wheel, and the knuckles were the color of candle wax.

"Zofia, that is his driver."

"I know whose driver it is. That is my father's house, and my father is in it with him."

"I will not be on the porch," Lucio said. "I'll be here. If you want me, say so, and I'll be in the kitchen before you finish the word."

"I won't want you."

He nodded once, and I walked up the path.

The third step held under my foot.

The man in the Lincoln watched me go by, and he smiled, and the smile showed a front tooth snapped off at an angle.

I kept my face where it was.

It was the same face I had used on the library steps, and it came to me as easily.

My father was in his undershirt at the kitchen table with a mug of tea.

Across from him, in the smaller chair, with his silver head bowed and his coat over his knees, sat Nunzio Castaldi.

There was a wicker basket on the oilcloth with a red ribbon on the handle.
