Chapter 16: Slowly

Pia kissed her brother on the top of the head and took the stairs two at a time.

I heard her door shut, and then I heard nothing, which meant she was standing behind it.

Lucio had not moved.

"I haven't forgiven you for Sunday," I said.

"Good." He turned the pencil end over end on the table. "Don't."

"You put me in that chair with a deed in my hand," I said. "You let me read it to fourteen men without telling me why."

"I know," Lucio said.

"I'm going to be angry about it for a long time."

"I'll be here for all of it."

I stood up, and he looked at me from the chair with the lamp behind him.

"I'm telling you yes tonight," I said. "It isn't the other yes. It's this one."

He rose very slowly.

Neither of us said anything for a moment.

"This isn't the library," he said.

"No." I took hold of his collar. "Is that in the terms, Mr. Castaldi?"

"It's in mine."

I kissed him then, hard enough that the chair scraped back behind him.

His hands went into my hair and undid my braid.

He lifted me by the waist onto the long table where his uncle had read him the mail for fifteen years.

I thought of that, and I wanted it badly.

"Here?" I said.

"Here." His mouth went along my jaw. "I want Nunzio to have to sit at this table tomorrow and know."
