Chapter 20: The Test Stone

Cassandra's POV

The Great Hall of the Territory Convocation had a ceiling so high that the voices went up and did not come back.

Two hundred Alphas sat in tiers on three sides, each in the color of their pack.

On the dais at the far end, seven Council chairs stood in a curve, and the Speaker sat in the middle one.

She was a small old woman with white braids and a stick across her knees.

Her eyes went over me once, top to bottom, without hurry.

I stood alone on the stone floor in the green coat Polly had given me.

Polly sat in the first gallery with her fists in her lap.

Bea was beside her, and a week of sleep had put some color back in her face.

Behind them, in the back row, stood a man in a plain jacket with no badge on it.

I did not look at him.

I could feel him anyway, standing behind me.

"The petition of the Alpha of Ironwood," the Speaker's clerk read. "Guardianship of his daughter Cassandra Harrowgate, unmated, ranked Beta in the public record. And guardianship of her unborn child."

"Unmated," I said, loudly.

Every head turned.

"I'm marked," I said, and I tilted my head so they could see the silver under my jaw. "My mate was bitten before witnesses at Cinderfall, in the east gate yard."

The clerk checked a paper.

"The mark is noted."

My father rose from the petitioners' bench.

He had shaved, and he wore his good jacket, and he looked ten years older than he had in the kitchen.

He did not look at me.

"Speaker," he said. "My daughter has been unwell since she was a girl.

"She is high-strung and unreliable. She left home without a word.

"She fell in with a Dire wolf twice her size, and she is carrying his child at eighteen."
