Chapter 17: Sworn Statement
On Monday the courier came at seven-forty, while three reporters stood on my lawn.
Rafe signed for the envelope on my porch, and the cameras clicked.
He had slept in my bed twice since Friday, and neither of us had mentioned it to anyone.
"Inside," he said, and put a hand on my back, and walked me past the lenses.
My mother had taken the kids to her house again. The duplex was quiet, and I hated it.
I opened the envelope at the kitchen table.
It was fourteen pages, stapled, with a seal.
"Petition for visitation," I read aloud. "By Daphne Marsden, godmother of the minor children."
"She has no standing," Rafe said.
"It says she has a sworn statement."
I turned to the last page and read it twice.
The affidavit said that Margot Eastlake had told Daphne Marsden, in her own words, that she knew of the four hundred thousand dollars. It said I had accepted it and had asked Daphne to deposit it for me.
It said I had been unwell for years and had needed a friend to care for my children.
It said I had never wanted Rafe to meet them.
"None of that is true," I said.
"I know."
"She signed it under oath."
"I know. Margot, look at me."
I looked.
"My mother's lawyer is on his way. Don't read it again."
He was already on the phone with the lawyer, so I read it again.
The lawyer arrived at nine, a tall tired man in a grey suit, and he laid out a single sheet of paper on my table.
"Ms. Marsden attached an exhibit," he said. "A text message, dated the winter after the children were born."
He turned the paper around.
It was from my number, to hers. I recognized the date. I had sent it from a bench outside the pediatrician, with Rory screaming in the stroller.
