Chapter 5: Saturday

I called Daphne from the parking garage with the check still in my fist.

She picked up on the first ring.

"She's lying," Daphne said, before I'd finished. "Mags, honey, listen. She's cornered. She'll say anything to split you two."

"She said she gave it to my friend."

"You have other friends."

I did. I had two coworkers and a neighbor.

"Don't let her get in your head," Daphne said. "She wants you shaking before Monday. I'm on my way, I'll sit with you."

I told her I was fine.

I said I'd call her tonight.

Then I tore Rafe's mother's check into four pieces and dropped them in a trash can.

On Saturday morning Rafe was on my porch at nine, exactly, with a thermos of coffee for me and a kite for the boys.

"It's October," I said.

"The man at the shop said it's windy in October."

"Ivy doesn't fly kites. Ivy supervises."

"Then I'll bring a clipboard next time."

My mother appeared behind me and told him there was a park four blocks away with a good hill.

We walked there in a line, three kids in front of us and a very awkward father in the back.

At the park Ivy took charge.

She made Rafe sit on the bench and answered her own questions while he listened.

"Do you have brothers?"
