Chapter 8: Aunt Daph

Rafe's POV

I went to Daphne's apartment on Tuesday night with a printed note in my pocket and no plan for what to say.

My mother's assistant had sent the bank copy of the check that morning.

It was cashed in Evanston on the sixth of July, the day after Margot got there.

On the back was Margot's name, signed in loops.

Margot prints, in capitals. She always has.

She opened the door in a grey sweater, with her hair tied back and a pot of soup on the stove.

The ring was on her finger.

"You came," she said. "Oh, thank God. Sit. I made your favorite."

I sat at her kitchen counter.

I had sat there a hundred times in six years, usually after a bad day, and she had always known the right thing to say.

"I need to ask you about the photographs," I said.

She went still with the ladle in her hand.

"The ones that came to the hotel six years ago. A friend of Margot's left them for me. Do you know who that friend was?"

"Rafe." She put the ladle down. "Honey, I've told you. I don't know. I was so worried about you that whole year."

"And the address I wrote letters to."

"The P.O. box?"

"Yes."

"Margot's mother's friend gave me that box number, and I passed it along to you." She said it quickly, easily. "I never saw what you sent. It was just a box."

"Whose name was on it?"

"I don't know, Rafe. Why are you asking me like this?"

I looked at her.

She was crying, a little, without sound.

It was a good face to see cry. It always had been.

"I'm not asking like anything," I said. "I just want to get it straight."
