Chapter 23: The Head of the Table
The petition against Ettore lay at the top of the agenda, and the oldest capo read it out loud and then tore it in half.
"Withdrawn by the one who wrote it," he said. "She will not be needing it where she is."
A few of the men laughed, not kindly.
The head chair stood empty at the end of the long table, and nobody looked at it.
Agata rose with her cane in her hand.
"The Don's chair is vacant," she said. "The table must fill it today, or the docks and the garages will be fighting by Monday. I will name a man."
"Donna, with respect," said the capo whose wife had adored Mirella. "You have a nephew in Providence. A cousin in the Bronx."
"I name my husband's son."
The room went silent.
"The bastard?" someone said under his breath.
Agata turned her head, and the mutterer found the tablecloth interesting.
"His mother poured drinks in a bar on Court Street," she said. "My husband kept her for twelve years, and I hated her for every one."
Ettore, by the wall, did not move.
"She raised this boy alone, in two rooms over a shoe repair shop. He stood in the servants' wing of my house for fifteen years and never raised his voice to me." The cane tapped once. "He kept the books honest while my son stole from them. He took my daughter-in-law out of my own house the night my son sent an ambulance for her, and he never took a penny for it."
"He took the Don's wife," the loud capo said.
