Chapter 8: Friday

I played the recording three times.

Ettore sat across the desk with his arms folded and let me.

"Tell the doctor Friday," I said. "What does a doctor do on Friday?"

"The family doctor has a friend who runs a private clinic upstate," he said. "It has locked doors and a long list of wealthy wives."

"They're going to put me in it."

"Dario will sign you in as your guardian. Two doctors, one signature, and nobody asks a Don about his wife." He rubbed his eyes. "I should have seen it. The pills, the ghosts, the doctor telling everyone you're unwell."

"The recording isn't enough."

"No."

"It's a man's voice on a phone. It doesn't say his name. A lawyer would say I invented it."

"A lawyer would be right." He leaned forward. "Carina, I want to take you out of that house tonight."

"No."

"Dario watches every move you make."

"If I vanish tonight, he knows I heard. He calls his friends, burns whatever's in the apartment and Mirella tells the families the sick wife ran away."

"And if you stay, you go in a car on Friday."

I stood up.

"I have until Friday," I said. "I'm going to stay in that house and sleep in his bed and smile at her over my cup."

"You'll go back to her flat for the scarf."

"I have to get it."

"That's the one thing I'm asking you not to do," Ettore said. "Not alone. She'll know the recorder's there the second she lifts the cushion."
