Sakaki drove them back to Tokyo on Sunday with the radio off.
Tatsuya slept in the back with his head against the window and his big hand loose on Shiori's knee.
At a red light on the Tomei expressway, Sakaki spoke to the windshield.
"The oyabun's bath ran twenty-two minutes on Saturday."
Shiori kept her eyes on the road.
"You timed it?"
"I time everything the oyabun does, madam." The light changed. "It is my job."
"And what did you do with the number?"
"Nothing."
He changed lanes.
"The heir is a good son," said Sakaki. "I only drive."
Shiori didn't understand him, and she decided not to ask in front of Tatsuya's sleeping face.
She sat with the forty photographs in her pocket.
She looked at the man beside her.
She was a prosecutor.
She had stolen a ledger in a gangster's inn, and instead of fear she felt something warm.
She had beaten his father at the old man's own game.
She wanted to tell him.
She wanted to tell this husband, who had just made himself the owner of a crime, that his wife was about to pull it all down around his father's ears.
She looked at his sleeping face, at the heavy shoulder under his jacket, and she held her tongue.
