Chapter 19: The Obi

Tatsuya tied Shiori's obi himself.

The kimono was the deep blue the old man had asked for, silk with a pattern of white cranes along the hem.

It had arrived at the penthouse in a paulownia box with no card.

Shiori stood in front of the long mirror in the dressing room with her arms held out.

Tatsuya knelt behind her with the wide gold sash in his hands, frowning at it.

"You've done this before," she said.

"On Sakaki. A dozen times."

"You tied Sakaki's obi."

"He lay on the floor and complained. I watched a video." He crossed the ends, tugged, and pulled the knot tight against the small of her back. "It's not meant to come off, is it?"

"Not by a man in a hurry."

"I'm not in a hurry."

She met his eyes in the glass.

He was dressed already, in a black montsuki with the Kuzunoki crest on each sleeve, and a hakama the color of ink.

With his hair combed back and the scar in his eyebrow, he looked like a lord from an old war in a woodblock print.

Shiori had never seen anything more beautiful, or more frightening.

"It's ten," he said. "We leave at eleven."

"I know."

"Sakaki is in the car already. He wouldn't be talked out of it."

"I know."

"Shiori." He rose and put both hands on her shoulders, and his thumbs moved over the silk. "If something goes wrong in that hall today..."
