Chapter 18: The Roof

The ladder to the roof went up through a hatch at the end of the east wing, and Ewan climbed it first.

"This is a bad idea," Kit said, behind him.

"I want you out of that room."

"Out of the room, and onto a roof, in December."

"There's a flat stretch behind the big chimney. My father used to come up here to look at the stars."

Kit climbed through the hatch and stopped.

Snow lay on the slates in long blue drifts.

Overhead the sky was black and crowded, and so clear that every star seemed to have a second one behind it.

The cold took his breath, and the great stone chimney beside them poured out heat.

Ewan spread a wool blanket on the lead behind it, where the snow had melted off in a patch the size of a bed.

"You said you'd tell me the plan," Kit said.

"I will."

"Then tell it."

Ewan sat with his back against the warm bricks and pulled Kit down between his knees.

"The elders," he said. "Six old wolves who served my father when he took the Crown. Merritt can't buy them, and he can't scare them, because he already pushed them out."

"Will they come?"

"The roads are shut in two valleys. Garth thinks nine days."

"And the moon's in ten."

"Yes."

Kit leaned back against the king's chest.
