Chapter 10: Faculty Row
He did not turn on the light.
The hall was dark except for the copper lamp in the front window, which threw a long warm shape across the floorboards.
I stood in it with my back to him and my heart going like a hammer.
"Come here," he said.
I turned around.
He stood a pace away, in his shirtsleeves, with his hands loose at his sides.

"You told me where to put my hands."
"I did."
"Tonight I'm going to tell you what I'm going to do," he said.

My stomach swooped.
"That's against my rule," I said.
"Nobody starts but me."
"Unless you say," he said.
"Then say it."
"Start," I whispered.
"Elias.
"Please."

It was deep and slow and full of intent, and he held me exactly where he wanted me, and my whole body went loose.
I made a small sound against his lips.
He backed me up against the wall of the hall, and his hands took both of my wrists and lifted them over my head and pinned them there with one of his.
