Chapter 12: The Mark

Low tide on Tuesday was at ten past five, and I was waiting for it at the seawall steps in my father's boots.

I had asked him to meet me there.

I hadn't said why.

He came down the steps in the charcoal shell with his canvas bag, and stopped when he saw my face.

"Liv."

"I want to show you something," I said.

"In the cave."

"Is it safe?"

"The tide table says we have until six," I said.

"I checked three times."

"So did I."

He almost smiled.

We went down together over the wet rocks to the cave mouth, with the whole ebb laid bare around us in a shining, weedy field.

Inside, the chamber was cold and dim and humming with water.

I lit my headlamp.

I walked to the east wall, to the long ledge where we had sat, and set the lamp on a rock so it threw a bright circle on the sand.

He stood in the circle's edge, with his hands at his sides.

"I've been wearing this for fifteen months," I said.

My voice was not steady.

"I have never taken it off for anyone.

"Not Freya.

"Not Caden.

"I think you should be the first person to see what's under it."

He didn't move.

I put my right hand on the buckle of the brown leather strap.

It was warm from my skin.
