Chapter 14: Lamp On

Liv's POV

We walked out of the dean's office at midnight through the front door, because she opened it for us.

She stood in the corridor with her keys in her hand and her navy coat over her arm.

"Good night, Miss Gundersen," she said, as if I had come by about a grade.

Nobody locked us in.

Nobody called anyone.

The button on her desk had only called the night watchman.

He stood at the end of the hall with a flashlight and a face like a closed door, and he walked us down three flights and out into the rain.

At the bottom of the steps Elias stopped and put his hand over his eyes.

"She knew," he said.

"She knew the whole time I was in there, and she let me read it."

"She wanted you to know she'd let you," I said.

"She wanted you to know the letter was never going to leave that cabinet."

He dropped his hand.

His face was wet and gray in the lamplight.

For the first time since the cave, he looked at me with no plan on it.

"I'm sorry," he said.

"I walked you into that."

"I walked myself," I said.

"Take me home."

I meant the cedar house, and he knew it.

We did not speak the length of the seawall.

At his door he fumbled the key twice.

I took it out of his hand and opened the door myself.

The copper lamp was burning in the window, and the house smelled of woodsmoke and the stew he'd left on the back of the stove.

I hung my coat on the peg beside his and stood in the hall in my socks.

I had been angry in the cave and frightened in the dean's office.

I was neither one now.

I was tired, and I was sure of one thing, and I was going to say it before I lost my nerve.

"I need to ask you something," I said.

"Anything," he said.

"When you look at me," I said, and stopped.
