Chapter 17: The Dean's Terms

The dean did not get out of the car.

She sat in the back seat with her window down two inches and her hands folded.

She waited for us to walk out to her.

"Don't," Elias said, quietly.

"I'm going," I said.

"She wants you to come to her."

"Yes," I said.

"So we pick where."

I turned and went back into the old man's kitchen.

"Is there a room with a door that opens onto the road?" I said.

He looked at me for a second.

"The front parlour," he said.

"The door stays open," I said.

"The door stays open," he said, and a smile creased his whole face.

The dean came in on her own two feet.

She walked into a parlour full of knitted afghans and stuffed gulls under glass, in her navy coat and low heels.

She took the only upright chair without being asked.

Her driver stayed in the car.

Freya stood in the open door with her phone down at her side.

Elias stood by the mantel, and the old man stood with his back to the window and his arms folded over his sweater.

I stayed on my feet.

"Miss Gundersen," Ragnhild said.

"I have come a long way."

"Eleven miles," I said.

"On your own ferry."

"I did," Ragnhild said.

"You're remarkably composed for a girl who was in my office at midnight."

"You let us out," I said.

"I wondered why."

She smiled.

"I wished to see what you would do with your freedom," she said.

"I went to Lopez," I said.

"You did," she said.

She looked down at her gloves and drew one finger along the seam.

"I am going to make you an offer," she said.

"I will make it in front of these people, because you like an audience, and because I am too old to keep things in corners."

"Go ahead," I said.

"Your scholarship is the Marit fund's," Ragnhild said.

"I chair the committee that renews it.

"I have been pleased with your marks.

"I should like to see it renewed through your degree, and your independent study closed without a note."

The room was very quiet.

"I should like to see the video taken off the island feed," she said.

"I have the means.

"And I should like to see Mr. Sandquist apologize to you in front of his team, and mean it."
