Chapter 19: The Choice
Elias's POV
On Saturday morning I sat in my brother's kitchen with my brother's ring on the table in front of me and a cup of coffee going cold beside it.
Liv was upstairs, asleep.
She had called her mother on Friday night and learned what the family had not told her.
The Marit was mortgaged.
The bank was the one that sat on the council, and it had called the loan on Thursday.
Liv had listened to all of it on my porch, in my gray sweater, and had come back in with her face wiped clean of everything but purpose.
I had asked her how much.
She told me, and I wrote the number on the back of an envelope while she watched.
"Don't," she said.
"It's not mine to take."
"It's not a gift," I said.
"It's a bridge.
"Your father can pay me back at whatever rate he likes, over thirty years."
"Elias," she said.
"The dean has your father's boat in a drawer," I said.
"I will not sit in a kitchen and let her use it."
She stared at me for a long moment.
"Ask him yourself," she said.
"Not me.
"Him."
So I had.
I called Captain Gundersen at seven that morning from the porch, in the cold.
A man I had never met spoke to me for ten minutes in a voice like gravel in a bucket.
At the end of it he said, "You're the one who kissed my daughter on the dock."
"She kissed me, sir," I said.
"I know," he said.
"I saw the video.
"My wife made me watch it twice."
"I'm sorry for the circumstances," I said.
"I'm not," Captain Gundersen said.
"She looked like her grandmother.
"Take your dinner, Doctor.
"Do what you came to do.
"I'll sort out my own boat."
