Chapter 23: What Fern Knew

Fern's house sat above the harbor, a narrow gray cape with a green door and a garden full of tomatoes.

I got there at seven the next morning, soaked from the walk, with no sleep behind my eyes.

His wife let me in without a word and put a mug of coffee in my hands.

Fern sat at the kitchen table in his undershirt, cutting a pear.

"Sit," he said.

I sat.

"You look wet," he said.

"I stopped him," I said. "Last night. I got in his lap and I stopped, and I told him he signed the order."

"Ah."

"Is that all you're going to say?"

Fern put down the knife.

"I'm going to say something I should have said in June," he said. "And you're going to be angry with me."

His wife sat down at the end of the table and folded her hands.

I felt the kitchen go very quiet.

"Your father's funeral," Fern said. "In the parking lot, after. The boy came to me."

"Ansel."

"He was twenty-seven. He had a suit that didn't fit. He stood there with his hands shaking, and he said, 'Mr. Michaud, I signed the order. I don't have a way to give it back.'"
