Chapter 35: The Harbor Stands

Nobody in the ballroom moved for a moment after the door closed.

Then the room found its voice, all at once, and the noise was dreadful.

I put the microphone back on its stand and started down the steps.

A hand shut around my arm above the elbow.

"You little bitch," Bryce said.

He said it low, close to my ear, through his teeth, and his fingers dug into the muscle until I felt the bone.

"Let go of me."

"Do you know what you just did? Do you have any idea? Eleven days. That was eleven days from closing," he said.

"I know exactly what I did."

"I'll bury you," he said.

He yanked me around to face him.

His face was dark red, and spit shone on his lip, and the easy salesman had gone out of his eyes.

That was when I heard the doors.

Both sets of double doors at the back of the ballroom had swung open, and people were coming in.

They came in work jackets and canvas coats and clean flannel shirts.

There were men with beards, women with thermoses, and boys of fourteen with their caps in their hands.

The bearded lobsterman was at the front.

Behind him came the bakery woman, and Fern in his Sunday suit, and Fern's wife.
