Chapter 17: The Sunroom

Eli's POV

My father's office had a view of the whole river, and I had never once looked at it.

I looked at it now while he finished a phone call.

He hung up and folded his hands on the desk.

"I admired that, this morning," he said. "Pulling the nurses into it. You've learned something."

"I learned it from you."

"I'm pleased."

I put my key card on the blotter.

Then my parking tag.

Then the letter I had typed at four in the morning, one paragraph, signed.

He read it without touching it.

"What is this?"

"I'm out. Effective today."

"Eli."

"I'm resigning as project director and from the board of the foundation. I'm also telling you that at noon I bought the loan on the Birchwood building from the bank that held it."

He sat back.

For the first time in my life I watched my father not have the next sentence.

"With what money?"

"Mom's trust. She left it to me at thirty."

"You told me you'd never touch that."

"I told myself that too."

"You're throwing away a company that carries your name for a girl who left you in a text."

"She left me because you sat on her couch with a box of pastries and lied to her."

"I did what any father would do."

"You did what you do." My voice was steadier than I expected. "You find the thing someone can't afford to lose and you offer to carry it. Then you hold the other end."

"I gave that man a roof."

"For three months."

"Do you know how much this family has done for the Doyles?"
