Chapter 17: The Church Door
The church in Southfield had a blue dome and a parking lot full of cars I knew.
Marwan stopped the Range Rover across the street, under a bare maple, and left the engine running.
"I'll wait here," he said.
"You'll stay in the car," I said. "Even if they look at it."
"They've been looking at it since we turned the corner."
He was right.
A man on the church steps had put his hand on another man's arm and pointed with his chin.
I did up my coat and fixed my scarf.
Marwan reached over and put one finger under the edge of it, as he had in the Meijer lot.
He lifted it an inch, looked at my throat, and set it back.
"Clear," he said.
"It's been clear for weeks."
"I like to check."
His knuckle stayed against my jaw a moment longer than the check needed.
I saw the pulse jump in his neck, under the beard, and I told myself he had slept badly.
He had slept very well.
I had watched him do it.
