Chapter 19: The Seat
Marwan's POV
I walked down the drive to the gate in my bare feet, and the snow burned the soles of them.
The Lincoln's rear window stayed up.
The driver's window came down one inch, and a white card came through it, and the car backed into the street and left.
Nahla came up behind me in my shirt and read the card over my arm.
It was in my uncle's small, neat hand.
Thursday. Six o'clock. Dix Avenue. The old men will hear you.
On Thursday I sat in my father's office and waited for them to come up the stairs.
There were five.
Three of them had known my father since the village.
One walked with a cane.
My uncle came last, in his good black coat, with his glasses on their chain.
He did not shake my hand.
He walked past me to the head of the long table, to the leather chair my father had sat in for thirty years, and sat down in it.
Nobody spoke.
I stood at the window with my hands in my pockets.
"We are here," said the oldest of them, the man with the cane, "because your uncle says you intend a foolishness."
"I intend something," I said.
"Say it, nephew," said my uncle, gently.
I took the box off the cabinet and put it on the table in front of him.
It was a cardboard box that had held cigarette cartons.
It was full of paper.
"Every note the family holds on a party store," I said. "Four hundred stores. Every weekly envelope, every late fee, every loan my father wrote on a napkin and I wrote in a book."
My uncle did not look at the box.
"I am giving them back," I said. "Tomorrow, each owner gets his paper and my word that nobody comes to his door. The wholesale stays. The envelopes end."
The man with the cane put both hands on top of it.
