Chapter 20: The Night Before
Nahla's POV
On Monday night I zipped myself into the black dress I was going to wear to the Sarafa hall, and I could not breathe.
It was plain wool with long sleeves and a high neck, and the housekeeper had taken it in at the waist.
It was the dress I would have worn to Fadi's funeral, if anyone had told me there was one.
I stood in front of the full-length mirror in the walk-in closet at the back of Marwan's bedroom.
The closet was bigger than the room over the Sarafa garage had been.
His shirts hung on one side in a row, and nothing hung on the other, because I had been moving my clothes in for two months a drawer at a time.
In the pocket of my black bag, on the shelf, lay a sheet of paper folded in four.
It was Yara's drawing, a red circle with four lines for legs, which she said was Tayta.
On the hook on the closet door hung the suit.
I had chosen it.
I had walked into a shop on Warren Avenue with a driver and a tape measure, and I had put my hand on the bolt of charcoal wool without looking at the black.
"Black says he came to mourn," I had told the tailor. "Charcoal says he came to eat."
The tailor had stared at me and then nodded.
Marwan came in behind me with the jacket in his hand.
He had the trousers on and the white shirt open at the throat and no tie.
He stopped in the doorway.
"Turn around," I said.
"I am here for the dress."
"I am here for the suit. Turn around."
He turned, once, slowly, in the closet light.
The charcoal wool fitted his shoulders and tapered at his waist.
