Chapter 21: Forty Days
At the doors of the Sarafa hall, two cousins put their hands on Marwan.
They went through his coat pockets first, and then his jacket, and down the seams of his trousers, hard, looking for a gun.
Marwan stood in the lobby in his charcoal suit with his arms out from his sides.
He looked at the wall.
I stood beside him in my black dress and watched him do what I had done in his kitchen, on the first morning, with my arms out.
I watched him do it for me.
"Nothing," one of the cousins said, and stepped back.
Marwan put his hands down.
He did not look at the cousin, or at me.
He held out his arm, and I took it, and we went in together.
The hall was the one where six hundred people had danced a month ago.
Tonight it held two hundred, all in black, at long tables laid for the forty-day meal.
There was lamb and rice on every table, and bread, and a dish of salt.
The head table stood on the dais under the chandelier.
Yousif sat at the middle of it in a black suit with the gold cross at his collar.
His sons stood behind him.
The priest sat at his right hand.
Warda sat at the far end, small and straight, with her hands folded in her lap and her eyes on the cloth.
My father sat three tables from the front, in his good coat, with his hat on his knee.
A chair stood waiting at the foot of the long table, below the dais, in the open floor where everyone could see it.
There was a second chair next to it.
"There," said the younger brother, without looking at us. His hand rose to his jaw and fell again.
