Chapter 18: The East Gate

The job lasted nine days.

It was a bookkeeping desk at a crawfish processor on the Henderson road, which the phone had found for me on a Tuesday.

[Task: Apply. Wear the blue blouse.]

I had worn the blue blouse, and the owner had shaken my hand and said I could start Monday.

On Monday morning he called me at seven.

"I'm real sorry, Odette," he said. "I can't have you."

"Did something happen?"

"Mr. Armand called me on Sunday. He sits on the board at the bank where I borrow. He said he'd hate for there to be a misunderstanding about my line of credit."

"Did he say why?" I asked.

"He said you'd taken something from his family. I don't know what. I've got fifty people on a payroll."

"I understand," I said.

I didn't.

I stood in my grandmother's kitchen holding the phone, and I thought of a green check with the corner torn off.

I went into my bag and found the envelope where I'd put the pieces.
