Chapter 19: Who Held the Door

Gabe's POV

The foreman called me a little after four.

He told me what Odette had done at the east gate, and he told me what she'd held up.

He said, "Mr. Gabe, you're going to want to talk to your daddy."

I was in my truck in ten minutes.

The mill was quiet when I came in, with the dryers cooling.

My father was alone in his office with the lamp on and a bottle of Maker's Mark on the blotter.

He had not poured any.

"She came to my gate," he said, without turning around. "In front of my men."

"I know."

"She said she was owed an explanation."

"She said you called her new boss," I said.

"I made a phone call. It's a free country."

"She said something else." I shut the door behind me. "She said you told her to ask me who drove me to the clinic."

He turned his chair around.

He looked old for the first time in my life.

He also looked, which was worse, relieved.

"You drove," I said. "I was in no shape to drive. You came and got me in your truck and waited in the lot."

"I did."

"You held the door."

"I'm your father," my father said.
