Chapter 14: Not Forgiven

I did not call him until eleven.

I had showered and eaten a room-service sandwich I did not taste.

I had read the note about forty times.

It did not say *forgive me.*

It did not say *I love you.*

It said that he would sign when I told him to, and not one minute before.

It gave the whole decision back to me, and I hated how much I had needed that.

I picked up the phone and dialed the house.

He answered before the first ring had finished.

"Neve."

"Come to the hotel," I said. "Ninth floor, room nine-forty."

"I will be there in twenty minutes."

"Don't bring anything."

"I will not," he said.

He knocked once, in nineteen.

I stood on the other side of the door in the hotel robe, with the belt knotted at my waist and the cord of a second robe in my fist.

I opened it.

He stood in the hall in his grey sweater with his hands open at his sides.

His eyes were swollen.

He had not slept or eaten, and he looked at me as though I were the last light in a long tunnel.

"Come in," I said.

He came in, and I shut the door and turned the lock.

"I don't forgive you," I said.

"I know."

"I want you to hear that before anything happens."

"I hear it," said Ansel.

"I'm still going to take what I want from you tonight."

"Yes."

His voice had gone rough.

A hot pulse went through me at the plain way he said it, and I let it show.
