Chapter 10: Sav Squad
Wyatt turned his phone around and let me read the text twice.
Then he set it face down on the dashboard.
"I'm not answering," he said.
"You can if you want."
"I don't want." He started the engine. "That's the rule. I'm telling you, and now you know."
He drove me home, and he didn't kiss me again.
He walked me to my door and stood there with his hands in his pockets.
I could tell what it cost him.
"Goodnight, Ruby."
"Goodnight."
I stood inside the dark hallway for a full minute with my fingers against my mouth.
On Wednesday, Laney slid into the booth across from me at the diner, five minutes before her shift, with her phone in both hands.
"I did a crime," she announced.
"What kind?"
"The kind where I made a fake account and joined a thing called Sav Squad."
She set the phone down in front of me.
"Fourteen thousand girls in a group chat. They're feral. I love them and I'm scared."
I scrolled.
There were photos of Savannah's coffee and dozens of heart emojis.
Then the pinned message from last night.
Savannah had written to her followers.
"Some people can't stand when you grow. Someone from my past keeps trying to drag me back. I'm not going to say who. I'm just asking you to hold space for me."
Under it were nine hundred replies.
"We got you queen."
"Is it the one who filmed you?"
"I heard she goes to the community college on Ash Street."
"I heard she works at the park."
I looked up.
"Did she name me?"
