Chapter 13: What I Know

The voicemail ended, and the phone went dark between the eggs.

Wyatt didn't reach for it.

"Friday," he said.

"You promised."

"I know what I promised."

He set his fork down on the floor beside his plate.

"Now I'm going to ask you what I asked in the truck," he said. "What aren't you telling me?"

My mouth went dry.

"Savannah is using Daisy to get to you," I said. "That's all of it."

"That's true."

"Then that's what I'm telling you."

"It's true, and it's not why you went white at my table." He kept his voice level. "You looked at my hand this morning like it had bitten you."

I put my own hands under my thighs so he couldn't see them.

"It's the first time I've woken up in someone's bed," I said. "I got scared of being happy."

It was the first lie I had told him since the rule.

I knew it the second it left my mouth.

So did he.

He didn't flinch.

He just looked at me for a while, with his gray eyes tired and not angry at all, and that was worse.

"You said that to my chin," he said.

"Wyatt."

"I'm not mad. Let me say it all before I decide whether I'm mad."

I nodded.

"In January you called 911 before there was a single boy in sight." He ran a thumb over the scar. "I've turned that over for nine months. I told you at the bridge that I could live with someday."

"You said it was fine."

"It was fine. It's not fine if someday is a wall every time her name comes up."

He said it gently, which made it land harder.

"You asked me to make a promise this morning. I made it without knowing why, because I trust you. But you're not trusting me back."
