Chapter 14: The Booth

Wyatt's POV

Savannah picked the corner booth at the Birch Street Bakery, the one with its back to the wall.

She was there before me, in a gray hoodie and a baseball cap pulled low, with a latte she wasn't drinking.

I slid in across from her and put my hands on the table.

Ruby's friend Laney had taped a pen microphone to the inside of my jacket pocket that morning, and made me say my own name into it twice.

The pen was clipped to my shirt now.

I could feel it every time I breathed.

"You came," Savannah said.

She sounded surprised and relieved, and I knew she had practiced both.

"You said it was about Daisy."

"It is." She wrapped both hands around the cup. "I'm so glad you didn't bring Ruby."

"I came alone."

"Good. She doesn't need to hear this. It would hurt her more than it'd help."

I waited.

I've waited for a lot of things in two years, so I'm good at it.

She let the quiet run until it was uncomfortable, then spoke in a small, careful voice.

"I couldn't stop thinking about her after the mall. Your sister. You said she passed two years ago, and I looked up the county road, and the crash, and the case."

"The case is closed."

"It isn't closed. It's just cold." She leaned in. "There's a man on the Lakeview crew whose father was a deputy. He told me those cases come back all the time if somebody with a big enough voice asks the right way."

"Somebody like you."

"I have almost a million followers now." Her eyes filled, quick and clean. "I could ask my followers if anyone saw a car on County Road 9 that night. People listen to me, Wyatt. I could fix what happened."
