Chapter 21: The Seat
Gemma's POV
The Albano table was long, black and scarred from fifty years of elbows.
Seven men sat along its sides.
At the head sat Cesare's father, a bald, heavy man with a gold ring on every finger, and at his right hand sat Cesare in a charcoal suit.
My mother sat in a straight chair against the wall, with her hands folded.
Luca took the chair behind mine and put his hands on his knees.
I laid the three ledgers on the table, one on top of the other.
"I speak once," I said. "I'll be quick."
"Take your time, signora," the old man said. "We have until noon."
"I won't need it."
I opened the first ledger and turned it to face the captain with the cane.
"These are wire transfers from Tessari Freight to a cousin of my husband's. Forty-one months, two hundred thousand dollars a month."
"We know about the cousin," the old man said.
"Do you know where forty cents of every dollar went?"
I turned to the second page.
"A warehouse in Red Hook with the Albano name on its deed. Your son's warehouse."
Cesare didn't move.
"The Tessaris signed a ceasefire with you three years ago," I said. "Your son has been taking their money since the week after."
The captain from Hunts Point leaned forward.
"My routes," he said.
"Sold to the Tessaris by the same cousin, on the same invoices, to bring Tessari freight into your territory." I slid a page to him. "Cesare told you the Amadoris did it. The signatures say otherwise."
