Chapter 23: The Name

I found her in the back parlor of the club an hour later, alone, drinking coffee from a thin white cup.

Luca stood at my shoulder, and I told him with a look to wait outside.

He went, and shut the door with great care.

My mother set the cup in its saucer.

"You're angry," she said.

"Sit still, Mother. I'm going to say it in order."

"Please."

"In September you laid two files on the table. Cesare's, and Luca's."

"Yes."

"You expected me to choose Cesare."

"I did."

"I'd chosen him before. You knew I would."

She said nothing.

It was the silence of a woman who did not intend to answer a question until it had been asked the right way.

"I took Luca's file," I said. "You said he would die young."

"I said it to make Carla sit down."

"You said it to me. You looked right at me."

"I said it," my mother said, "because I saw your face when you picked up his folder, and I knew you had changed. You were looking at the table like a woman who had stopped being afraid of it."

I held very still.

"I couldn't spend you if you were going to bite," she said. "So I sent you to a man nobody would fight over, to wait until the Albano peace was safe.

"I had Nunzio's father pay me two million through Bay Ridge Cartage to send you far away, so you'd stay quiet.
