Chapter 27: Five to Six

Luca opened the door in his trousers and nothing else, and Nunzio Tessari looked at the scar on his ribs and forgot what he had come to say.

"You're supposed to be dying," Nunzio said.

"I've been told."

I came out of the bedroom in Luca's shirt with my hair down.

"Come in, Nunzio," I said. "Sit. Don't shout. My sister is asleep next door."

"Your sister," he said, and his face worked. "My father sat me down at four this morning. He told me that a woman in Brooklyn owns forty percent of my family's trucks.

"He wouldn't say who."

"My mother."

He sat down on the couch very slowly.

"Donatella Rossetti."

"She bought in the year you turned twenty-two. She has taken a tithe of every load for eleven years."

"And she's been sitting at my engagement dinners."

"Yes."

He put his head in his hands.

When he lifted it again, he looked about ten years older and a great deal more dangerous.

"What do you need?" he said.

"Be on the church steps at six. Stand by the bell rope. Say nothing until I lift the lamp."

"And then?"

"Then say whatever your father would not."

He nodded once.

At twenty to six the snow had stopped, and the whole parish of Saint Lucia stood in the street with candles in paper cups.

There were three hundred of them, grandmothers in black wool, men in their good coats, children on shoulders.
